Surface Preparation
The surface to be coated should be completely dry and large cracks filled prior to application. Dust and dirt need to be completely removed from the surface. If Silk Plaster is to be applied over previously painted surfaces they should be thoroughly scraped of any flaky paint and cleaned. Pay special attention to oily or greasy areas on the surface as Silk Plaster might not properly adhere there. Remove any nails, staples, pins and other metal objects to avoid traces of rust appearing on the surface later. The next step is to prime the surface with acrylic primer. Use a primer of a similar colour to the colour of Silk Plaster to be applied.
Silk Plaster is an internal coating and is not suitable for use on exterior surfaces, wet surfaces, metals, brick and very broken or fragmented surfaces without prior preparation.
Application
One pack of Silk Plaster should cover approximately 4 sq. meters when spread about 1 mm thick.
Add the required quantity of Silk Plaster to a plastic container and add hot water (40-50C) - 6 liters of water per pack of Silk Plaster. Mix thoroughly and knead well until there are no solid lumps and leave the mixture to stand for about 30 minutes (refer to instructions on the pack) while stirring occasionally. If the mixture is still very thick and will not spread easily, simply add a little more water to the mix.
Use a plastic trowel to apply the mixture onto the surface. The Silk Plaster coat needs to be 1-2 mm thick.
Make sure you have prepared enough material to cover one wall out of one mix. If you find that the mixed material is running out during an application, just add more material and water to the remaining amount and mix well. By doing this, you can avoid variance of colour.
Silk Plaster should not be applied in temperatures below 5C
The initial surface colour may be slightly different from the colour in the catalogue. When the surface is completely dry it will acquire its final appearance (within 48 hours).
After the surface is completely dry, the acrylic varnish can be applied to further improve wear and cleaning qualities.
Repairs
Spray water on the damaged or soiled area and let the water to soak in. Then repair the spoiled fragment with the small quantity of prepared mixture of the Silk Plaster. Let it dry and the patch will not be noticeable.
Cleaning
Smart Décor Silk Plaster surfaces have antistatic and dust repellent qualities so there will not be significant dust build-up on the walls. However, feather duster or soft brush can be used to clean the surfaces or alternatively the vacuum cleaner with the upholstery attachment will be efficient as well.
